Southern Ohio Crime Stoppers is considering paying a police officer or detective from a law enforcement agency that it represents. Attached is a statement from Southern Ohio Crime Stoppers President, Sheila Stearos, which outlines this position.
“The Chillicothe Police Department has had to cut officers from duty, beginning September 24th. In addition, other counties that we support also have lost officers and funding. This lack of staffing could affect law enforcement’s response to Crime Stopper tips. We are considering allocating a portion of our funds to hire a commissioned police officer or detective to serve as a dedicated coordinator for Crime Stopper’s tips regionally, the tip information South Central Ohio citizens provide to help. This position would ensure that tips are directed to the appropriate detectives in the region as well, would be responsible to provide regional support, to keep the SOCS tip records current, and to follow-up with department detectives on tips for updates. This position is not intended to replace our current local coordinator’s efforts but rather to support their efforts. We would like to learn how the public feels about this opportunity. Would you please take a moment to answer two quick questions below to let us know? You also can contribute to this fund for the support of a dedicated officer. If the proposed levy passes and funds are available for the department to retain its current staff, prior to layoffs, any donations would be used for a period of six months or less, whichever comes first, to retain the services of a dedicated Crime Stoppers liaison. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask”
Sheila Stearos, President
